Pilot Program Highlights Military Connections Among MCCS Retail Division
Working aboard a military installation and serving service members and their families is a privilege that MCCS Lejeune-New River takes seriously. MCCS has long supported service members and their families through employment opportunities, recognizing the challenges military families face when relocating. Currently, fifty-one percent (51%) of MCCS Lejeune-New River's employees have military connections, such as being retirees, veterans, dependents, or active-duty personnel.

In a move to foster community pride and recognition, the Retail Division has introduced a pilot program for their staff, featuring new uniform shirts with a camouflage logo that identifies wearers as military-connected individuals. “We initiated this program because we wanted to recognize the military connections many of our team members have. Whether they're veterans, spouses, or family members of service members, these connections create an authentic understanding of our customers' experiences," said Drew Walker, MCCS Lejeune-New River Retail Division Director.

Inez, an associate at Camp Lejeune MCX and MCCS Lejeune-New River employee for the past six months, chooses to wear the new shirt. As an active-duty Marine spouse, she regularly uses various on-base resources, including the Child Development Center and commissary. "I enjoy being involved on base, and I recognize that it is a privilege to be able to wear this shirt," Inez said. "I have had a few customers ask me about it, and I love talking about it. Sometimes another spouse sees my shirt and realizes that I know how they feel, and we make a connection because we have that in common."

The initiative represents another way MCCS strengthens community bonds while acknowledging the unique perspective military-connected employees bring to their service roles at the Exchange.

Katie, a Navy veteran of eight years, has been employed with MCCS for seven years and is also proud to wear the shirt. “I have been connected to the military my whole life, so working aboard a military installation was an easy decision. It feels good to be around service members and other veterans and allows me to give back to a community that means so much to me.”

"We're incredibly proud of our military-connected team members," Walker added. "They bring unique insights and dedication to their roles, enhancing our ability to serve this community effectively."
